FAQ

WHAT IS THE VOTING PROCESS FOR THE DETROIT MUSIC AWARDS?

The voting process consists of three phases:

PHASE 1: SUBMISSION PHASE

The Submission phase is designed to build a list of choices to assist current (or newly registered) Detroit Music Awards voters when filling out the online Nomination Ballot during PHASE 2 of the online voting process. Anyone can enter the names of all eligible recordings, artists, bands, etc. to be considered as possible choices within a field when using the online Nomination Ballot during PHASE 2. These submissions will be available as suggestions during Nominations, but in no way will voters choices be limited to submitted names.

Registration is not required to add names and recordings during the Submission Phase; you are allowed to enter as many names and recordings as you like at any time during the Submission Phase.

Submitting names or recordings during this phase does NOT nominate the Artist, Group or Recording for the Final Ballot.

Names eligible to be considered as choices must have a connection, or perform a body of work, primarily in the Detroit metro area, which, for our purposes, stretches as far north as Flint, as far west as metropolitan Ann Arbor, as far south as the Ohio border, and as far east as the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair.

Recordings eligible for the 2007 Detroit Music Awards to be considered as choices must have been released between December 1st 2005 and November 30th 2006.

PHASE 2: NOMINATION PHASE

Only current (or newly registered) Detroit Music Awards voters are allowed to participate in the Nomination Phase.

During this phase, the Nomination Ballot is available online after a Voting Member has logged in. Eligible voters with email addresses are contacted via email that the Nomination process has begun.

The Nomination Ballot allows voters to nominate whomever they choose for performance and recording categories that meet the eligibility requirements, either by typing/writing their choice or selecting from names/recordings provided in Phase 1 (online ballot only).

Names eligible to be considered as Nominees must have a connection, or perform a body of work, primarily in the Detroit metro area, which, for our purposes, stretches as far north as Flint, as far west as metropolitan Ann Arbor, as far south as the Ohio border, and as far east as the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair.

Recordings eligible for the 2007 Detroit Music Awards to be considered as choices must have been released between December 1st 2005 and November 30th 2006.

PHASE 3: FINAL VOTING PHASE

Only current (or newly registered) Detroit Music Awards voters are allowed to participate in the Final Voting Phase.

During this phase, the Final Voting Ballot, taken from the most nominated recordings, artists, etc. from the Nomination Phase, is available online after a voter has logged in. Eligible voters with email addresses are contacted via email that the Final Voting process has begun.

The Final Voting Ballot allows voters to select from among the top nominees identified during the Nomination Phase in each of the performance and recording categories.

DOES MY BAND NEED TO SUBMIT A RECORDING TO BE ELIGIBLE?

No. Only your release information is necessary. During the submission phase ("Phase One"), please submit name of band, name of recording, release date and category in which it should be considered. The MCMF compiles a list of eligible recordings each year that is as comprehensive as possible. We include this list with the ballot as a helpful tool for voters, but recordings not included on the list are still eligible for nomination by voters.

WHO VOTES FOR THE DETROIT MUSIC AWARDS?

The voting database consists of approximately 3000 members of the Detroit musical community. If you are actively involved in the music industry in Detroit and wish to participate in the voting process, please go to the Registration page. Musicians, managers, booking agents, media representatives, club management, sound technicians and other music industry professionals are all eligible to apply.

HOW ARE PERFORMERS SELECTED FOR THE DETROIT MUSIC AWARDS SHOW?

Potential performers are selected by a committee of Advisory Council and Executive Board members.

Please understand that there are a great many artists who wish to perform at the Detroit Music Awards and only a very small number can be accommodated. Basically, there are seven or eight slots available at a maximum. Some of our principal criteria are:

  1. The ability of the artist to draw an audience.
  2. The lack of overlap between the artist and the other acts that will be on the bill as we strive to present an array of diverse musical styles at the Detroit Music Awards show.
  3. Public recognition and fame of the artist.
  4. The quality of the artist (while this is somewhat subjective, we try to put on acts that represent the best in their respective genre).

Selections are made by the Talent Committee, which submits recommendations to the Executive Board. The Executive Board makes the final decisions and is at liberty to reject any or all of the recommendations of the Talent Committee. Again, let us stress that very few of the many deserving acts who want to perform at the Detroit Music Awards will be invited to do so.

Another possibility that you may want to consider is having your artist or artists perform at a fundraiser showcase event for the Motor City Music Foundation and the Detroit Music Awards by contacting Kent Agee or Darrell Garrett. Some bands choose to do this so that they can not only help the Foundation and the Awards show, but possibly gain some exposure for themselves. Again, to be considered in this regard we would need to have the band's recordings together with any other relevant information.

If you have any questions or would like further information on how to submit material, you can contact us using the Contact Page.

HOW CAN I BE INVOLVED AS A VOLUNTEER?

We welcome anyone who would like to participate. Please attend an advisory council meeting or to determine how you might be able to contribute. Please refer to the Events calendar on this site to find out the next meeting date.

WHERE CAN I BUY TICKETS FOR THE DETROIT MUSIC AWARDS?
